John A. Lang was born in Quincy, Illinois---a fourth generation Lutheran pastor in his family. He earned a BA in history from Culver-Stockton College in 1967, a MA in Intellectual history from Illinois State University in 1971, and did graduate studies in art history, literature and philosophy at California State University from 1977-1980.

He taught History and Humanities at Westmoreland Community College, Pennsylvania, 1971-1980 and was Associate Professor of History and Humanities when he left for seminary.

He received his MDiv. from Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1983 and served congregations in Pittsburgh, PA, Monroeville, PA, Plainwell, MI., and South Holland, IL. John was pastor of Bethany, Lemont, IL (1983-2012), from which he retired. He now lives with his wife Nancy in Wilmette, IL and they are members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Evanston.
